About the evening
Once a year, on a long summer evening in the north of England, we set a long table for a hundred people who know one another only by reputation, and ask them to stay until the candles burn down.
There are no pitches and no name tags. There is a sommelier, a string quartet that becomes a DJ at midnight, and a guest list that has been quietly assembled across months. We dress for it. We mean it.
By the time the cars start arriving at three in the morning, half the room is exchanging numbers and the other half is making plans for September. That is the point.
